Boney M. was a German pop group with Caribbean roots in the disco genre, which had its peak during the late 1970s and early 1980s.
The group was formed in 1975 by music producer Frank Farian, but initially without any members. Farian himself performed all the vocals at first, and it took a few years before real artists allowed for live performances. The core members during their successful years were four people of Caribbean descent: Marcia Barrett, Liz Mitchell, Maizie Williams, and Bobby Farrell.
The group’s major breakthrough came with the song Daddy Cool in 1976, but Ma Baker from 1977 also became a global hit. Many of Boney M.’s songs were covers, including the massive hit Rivers of Babylon(1978), which became the second best-selling single of all time in the UK at that point.
